Formative Play

My relationship with video games began early. I have an older brother, and I started playing games with him when I was just two years old. He is two and a half years older than me, but even back then he really wanted to teach me how to play too, I think mainly because he didn’t enjoy playing the games on his own. We played console games – we had a Nintendo 64 (N64), at home in France, and a Mega Drive, too. I can remember not being able to hold the controllers properly, but nevertheless, my brother stuck at it, and he taught me how to play a lot of games. Of course, back then, and for years after, we were just playing for fun – I had no idea about competitive gaming, or if I wanted to become the best at a particular game, or anything like that.

My cousins would come over to play video games with us, too, or we’d go to their house, and we’d play all evening long. They’re some ten years older than me, but while I was the youngest in the group, I never wanted just to sit there and watch. And also, I didn’t want them to include me in their games only to be nice, or out of a sense of pity. I was always thinking: I want them to accept me because I’m good enough, and not for any other reason. So, I think I must have been about eight years old when I decided I wanted to get good at the games I was playing. I started to be able to compete with them, and they really enjoyed playing with me, and it was at that age that I got into StarCraft too, as we’d got a PC in the home by then.

On the N64, I’d play Mario Party with my brother and cousins, and then GoldenEye 007 and Mario Kart when I was a bit older. We would play the four-player split-screen mode on GoldenEye. But actually, I was only playing a first-person shooter because I was following what other people were playing – I wanted to play whatever my brother was playing. And it was my brother who got me into StarCraft. I would watch him play it, all the time, and I just had to try it. As it turned out, I got into it quite easily.

I wouldn’t say that I became addicted to StarCraft, but it was the only game I put many, many hours of play into back then. I was having a lot of fun playing it, but there was something else to the game too, that the Nintendo games didn’t give me. I was able to compare myself with other players, around the world, using the online rankings. Looking back, I think that’s where my competitive side started.

My brother has always helped me get into certain games – after StarCraft, when I was maybe thirteen, he began playing Warcraft III, and so I did, too.
